Vote Manute 2014

So I went to the sailing club meeting. And the Society of Physics Students meeting (don't ask...). At the sailing club meeting I met a kid who was looking for people to go sailing with Thursday morning. I went with him because I didn't have classes until one, but the wind was sadly not enough to take a boat out. Hopefully on Saturday we'll try again!
Last night as a study break a few of us went bowling, and in the midst of getting strikes and spares like nobody's business I saw two professors from the DMES ... weird! I guess in college it's not as strange to see professors out of class, but it's still not normal to me yet.
And in case any of you are planning on voting in the 2014 presidential election in Africa, or even if you're not, check this out. It's the highlight of my week.

Midnight Sonic run

... on a school night! Yes that's right, not having class till 11 am on wednesdays is spectacular. Yesterday I finally had my "intro to space sciences" course (from 5-615... gross) and I have the perfect teacher for the course. He's super excited about everything space related and our assignment for the next month is to just look at the moon and jupiter and think about it. (*by the way, if you look in the Southwest sky at night the brightest thing there is probably jupiter right now)
And dear ocean, I'll hopefully be seeing more of you because I got a job! Dr. Oceanographer saved me a workstudy position and I start on Monday.
I am planning on attending the Sailing club meeting and the Student Astronomical Society meeting tonight. I'll give you the update later!

When in doubt, blow it up.

That's the motto of my chemistry teacher. A little frightening, yes. He popped a couple of hydrogen filled balloons with a match yesterday in class, which is probably the most exciting thing a science teacher has ever done during a lecture thus far. In math yesterday afternoon, I almost fell asleep despite wearing my smart glasses, and today in chemistry lab I attached the bunsun (sp?) burner to the air instead of the gas. whoops!

But besides all that, this kid from california (apparently waay more awesome than MN) is trying to use up all 100 of his "unlimited" meal plan this week. He's down to 75 and it's quite the entertainment while we eat. Also, in the cafeteria I ordered a veggie burger, they were out, so the guy made me a grilled cheese and then proceeded to ask if I wanted a corn dog with it. Logic? I'm still trying to find it.

Monday Fun-day

Today is a beautiful day. I received a package with a branch from my tree back in Minnesota, and it's making my huge blank wall look a lot better. I tried coloring a picture of the ocean for my wall, and a hallmate tried to "help" by drawing a dolphin in the middle of it (ha. ha.). The weekend involved a lot of games in my room and an extreme game of spoons in the lounge. Apparently spoons is not a universal game- I had to teach it to everyone! And according to another one of my hallmates, I don't fit in here. Awesome.
More updates after math!

beach today?

Dear ocean,
With any luck I'll be seeing you today! That is if we can, for the third time, fit at least eight people into a five-seater car. Classes yesterday were just fine, and I even went to the sorority/fraternity introductions thing (strictly for the free cookies). So after my new friends found out I'm alone in my dorm, they helped move the beds and create a living/party area, which came in handy last night as we played cranium late into the night. It also came in handy considering you practically need a gas mask to walk through our "lounge" area. So now I'm going to go research Minnesota because I'm having to defend it a lot these days.

whitney!
p.s. this crazy girl just moved in at "hippie-vegetarian-treeclimbing-why can't we smoke in the dorms" school and I know she's going to fit right in... but I hope she doesn't make any really cool friends (is that selfish?)

No school today, again.

You know you're desperate for something to do when...

-you try to extend your afternoon nap for another two hours just so you don't have to think of what to do from 4-6
-your excitement for the evening is walking to a 711 to buy snacks
-you start reading ahead in all of your textbooks which you haven't even had class for yet
-you make an hourly graph of the wind speed and direction... just for fun
-you don't argue when you end up watching "crank," "man on fire," AND "behind enemy lines" in one day

I've never wanted school to be open so badly!

Extreme Boredom

So Fay thought it'd be funny to just chill out around the melbourne/cocoa beach area for the past twelve hours...
Classes got out at three yesterday and were cancelled for all of today. We have several newly formed lakes and rivers on campus, and the botanical gardens now have underwater benches! Many rooms on our floor are flooded, but the main problem is finding anything to do in this building. In other news my "the whole earth" course yesterday was fabulous. There are five (six?) professors teaching it and I know I'm going to learn a lot. Hopefully we'll get a gilmore girls marathon going today, and since this school is mostly boys, by "we" I meant "me."

Lab coats and Tropical Storms

Dear Ocean,
You've given us a tropical storm. Awesome!
It's raining a lot right now, winds have been steadily increasing over the past few hours, and I still have classes this afternoon! This has been fun because it's located on top of where I live.
My classes have been alright so far. I have a chemistry teacher who already used the phrase Artsy Fartsy, a composition class with some ESL students, a calculus teacher who already gave us homework, and a Chemistry lab that got shortened to 40 minutes (originally three hours). This afternoon (if classes are still being held) I will have calc again, "the whole earth", and "intro to space sciences." Should be exciting to say the least!
Hope to see you soon!
Love, whitney!
p.s. I finally moved my beds together and I'm pretty sure the winter weekend jacuzzi sleepers would find it quite spacious.

Day One

Today I embark on a great adventure known to the majority of the world as "college." I've already technically been here for close to 7 days, but I don't think orientation really counts. It's just a lot of mingling around with "Hi I'm whitney, what's your major?" kind of conversations, and the result is basically just a lot of really uncomfortable brand new friendships. But today I finally get to start learning! In just a few short minutes I will be finding my first official college course (Chemistry) and hopefully making good impressions on everyone I meet. Wish me luck!
