...meet me in the graveyard...

It was so good to be home. The fall weather was spectacular, my friends are amazing, I love my family, and the snow added a good story to share. Plus, I got a sweet mustard sweatshirt at savers (which I've worn too much already)!

I'm back in Florida, and I brought the nice crisp weather with me. Seriously, I think I saw kids in parkas yesterday (it was maybe 12-13 degrees). Sad, they don't appreciate the beauty of being able to breathe.

Just go north

Dear Ocean,
You're great and all... and you're actually the only thing that kept me here last night. After skyping to the loves of my life (no, bubba doesn't have a computer), I just decided I needed to go. Only one person really understands this. But all of a sudden I just needed to go... and all I had was a bike. So I went on a little bike ride last night from about 12-130 with the full intentions of reaching them. Even though I got "significantly" closer to them, I eventually turned around, and let me tell you it was a very sad U-turn. Only three days, right?
Love,
whitney!

An enjoyable homecoming?! What?!

I know I'm in the right school when a pepfest is twenty kids on the lawn pretending to be excited about a sport, the snacks at the 'dance' include dunkaroos and gushers, and it's totally acceptable for me to wear a dress with leaves on it. After busting out my sick dance moves for 3hrs at the official homecoming dance, I learned how to dance regae with my friends from jamaica and the bahamas and nigeria. I love it. Three guys and me in a dorm room blasting reggae music and after-partying for probably another 2+ hours. Let me just say that we were definitely having more fun than Kermit's "I'm going to put vodka in milk and sit around wasted" roommate.
And then there was salsa dancing with Costa Rica and Jamaica till about 6am.

Oh, and did I mention that I was sailing from 10am-4pm?

I'm tired. And I can't feel my legs.

Goodnight ocean,

love,

whitney!

12 days!

Dear Ocean,
On Thursday evening a tragic event happened in my life at the cafeteria, and it did not involve dropping a tray of food.
As I walked into Evans Dining hall that evening accompanied by some fourth floor friends, not only was I not in the mood for another greasy veggie burger but I was not in the mood to take ten minutes deciding what looked good to eat. So I settled for a plateful of the "lentil casserole" which was in the location where the typical non-meat casserole type dish is kept. And so as I sat down and took a big sporkful of the mash like mush of vegetables and "whatnot" it didn't feel right in my mouth. After I swallowed I looked through and found, to my horror, little shrimpies in my thought to be vegetarian meal. That's right ocean, I ate a shrimp. Not just a piece of sea food, but a little curled up sad looking shrimp. All he wanted to do was swim around in the ocean, but instead he will be shriveling in my stomach acid.
The only cure was a plate of french fries and double dessert.
... and some tears

ice skating, atmosphere, and stream discharge

This week flew by! On friday night I, surprisingly, went ice skating! It was the first time on ice for the crazies from the bahamas, domincian republic, and LA. They did alright though. After we got back we realized that chemistry and math was due by 11:59pm (online hw). So until just about 11:59 we were all working on that in my room. And just when Xenia and I were ready to storm down to The Rat* and yell at whoever screwed up our pizza order, Jared, the pizza delivery guy, brought us a new pizza and complimentary cookies. Some things just always end up working out. Like when I proclaimed I really wanted pancakes at 5 in the morning, and some random guy just pulled some out of his freezer. Ask and you shall receive!

Saturday night we made the treck to orlando to witness some of minneapolis' finest. Atmosphere. The opening act, blueprint, was awesome but the next guy from LA kind of sucked. It was fun to be all minnesotan pride, but at the same time it was not fun to be in a cloud of smoke and spilt beer. What happened to no smoking indoors? Is that a minnesotan thing?

Today, however, is homework day, which is clearly why I am blogging! I just got back from measuring the stream discharge of Crane Creek with alex, my trusty engineering friend with a tape measurer, and according to my calculations it is .0511m^3/s. I hope that's right! In our hydrosphere homework it just said "use the necessary measurements to calculate the stream discharge of crane creek". So I hope whatever measurements I made were okay!

Grandpa Nick, if you're reading this, you should know that your gooey goodness bars are amazing. Now that everyone on my floor has tried them I have to lock my door. It's ok to be selfish when it comes to prized baked goods, right?

Finally, some dancing!

Last night at the Latin dance class at the gym our teacher announced that she and some others would be going to Roxy's in Orlando at 10:30 for Latin dancing night. So why not go, right?! Xenia and I had the most ridiculously fun time, we danced our hearts out until almost 3, and got home by 5am. After dancing with our own guys (to show off our sick moves) we danced on the sides to attract new partners and low and behold I danced a whole song with a 55+ short Latino man. It was hilarious, and quite nauseating because he never stopped spinning me! At least it was something for the rest of the group to watch and laugh at. But besides that it was all pretty innocent fun, minus the creepy guy who tried to dance with me while still holding a cigarette(don't worry I had guy friends ready to butt in whenever necessary, which they did!). Xenia and I were even complimented by a cuban girl we came with --"you two are the only white girls I know who can dance", which is when we realized we were probably the only two white girls in the whole club. Awesome. I love dancing.

Happy October! (But still Xeniaber)

Can anyone tell me about what time of day Venus will set when at its greatest western elongation? No? Well all I can tell you is that it's not at 6pm. Stupid Intro to Space Science test. Seriously I'm starting to question that "It'll be fun!" decision more and more. Oh well at least he plans on scaling all of our tests so the (now D) average will be a B.

In my "the whole earth" course we are now studying the "hydrosphere," which is actually really interesting, but we received this massive homework assignment that includes questions like:
10. How many "big gulps" of sea water would the entire human population per person need to drink in order to consume one second's worth of volume transport through the Straits of Florida?
Think about that!

True story:
My toe nail has been wanting to fall off for awhile now, but it was still kind of stuck on until last week. I was putting jeans on and the flap of toe nail got caught on the jeans and was just REALLY close to wanting to come off. So I ran to my "boyfriend"'s room and demanded that he rip it off. He absolutely wouldn't do it, so I then had to do it myself which was quite painful and took a lot of will power. Disgusting.
Anyways, later that day I was telling my story to a group of friends saying "basically I realized I don't have someone to rip off my toenail here" and wonderful St.Louis said "I'd rip off your toe nail!" So thank you St.Louis, I've realized that now I have at least one person here who would [insert disgustingly necessary thing] for me.

Thanks ocean, you're amazing.
love,
whitney!
